Mermaid Tales theme
Inspired by the legend of the Warsaw Mermaid. There once was a young fisherman named Wars who lived on the banks of the Vistula River. One day, when going with his nets to the river, he heard a girl’s voice singing a song:
Seven waves guard me
Seven thunders shield me.
He who has no fear
May he come and free me?
The voice was so beautiful, sweet and enticing that Wars did not hesitate. ‘I don’t fear anything!’ he called out, jumping into his boat to find the singer. But a terrible storm broke out as soon as he left the shore. ‘I will smash your oars!’ roared the thunder. ‘I’ll tear your nets to shreds!’ howled the wind. ‘We’ll sink your boat!’ threatened the waves.
But Wars rowed so fast that neither the wind, waves, or thunder could catch up with him. When he reached the middle of the river, he saw a strange figure among the waves: half fish, half girl – a mermaid. Though surprised, Wars moved the boat nearer and stretched out his hand. The mermaid handed him a shield and a sword. And then suddenly… she turned into a beautiful girl! ‘My name is Sawa,’ she said, ‘From now on, would you be the one to defend me, the river and the town!’
The brave Wars and the beautiful Sawa lived happily ever after, and the town on the banks of the Vistula river grew into Warsaw’s gallant and beautiful city. The waves flow like before, and the wind sings of the mermaid, which is now commemorated on the Warsaw city crest.
