The NIADA Dollmaking School offers classes for anyone wishing to learn dollmaking techniques from NIADA Artists. Classes are taught for all skill levels in techniques such as sculpting, painting, fabric-figure making, textile design, armature design, costuming and more. NIADA Conference registration is not required to attend the Dollmaking School.

Full-day classes run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a break for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Evening classes run from 7 p.m to 10 p.m.
Some classes require payment of a fee for a kit providing materials necessary for participating in the class. All kit fees will be collected by the teachers on the first day of class.

How to Sculpt and Finish the Mr. Something Else Face

Description
Students will learn how to sculpt the Mr. Something Else face with Creative Paperclay. The face will be painted and finished and students also will make the top-hat!

Sculpting and Painting an Egg-shaped Dollface or a Heart -shaped Dollface

Description
Students will learn how to sculpt and paint a dollface of their choice (either egg-shaped or heart-shaped) using Creative Paperclay

Sculpting a Woman’s Head and Breastplate in Polymer Clay

Description
Students will learn a method of sculpting that will help them visualize and develop his or her own style of sculpting. They will earn the anatomy and bone structure of an adult woman, how to build a foil armature and will receive instruction on stationary and movable head with breastplate.

Intermediate, Advanced – familiarity with basic sculpting skills.

Students must bring: Clay rolled out on the largest setting on a pasta machine This should be done before the class starts so we can start sculpting right away Favorite sculpting tools, double pointed knitting needles sizes 4mm to 6mm, #2 filbert taklon brush (optional, but very useful for smoothing), a 1/4 inch dowel about 4-6 inches long with one end pointed (use a pencil sharpener), a piece of wood with a 1/4 inch hole drilled into it to us as a sculpting stand to hold the dowel.

Sculpting Hands in Polymer Clay

Facial Expressions

Description
We will discuss and sculpt two different facial expressions with air dry clay on 2.75 inch Styrofoam eggs. The choices will be happy, angry, surprised or arrogant.

Students will learn new techniques to work with air dry clay and they will learn how to sculpt expressions. They will take home two sculpted heads in different expressions.
Teacher provides: Two clay covered Styrofoam eggs for the heads, clay to finish and all tools needed.

Students must bring: Box or bubble wrap to transport finished heads.

Playing with Synthetic Organza

Description
Students will learn how to use synthetic organza to create decorations or clothes for your dolls.

Fabrics Made Fabulous

Description
Frustrated searching for just the right piece of fabric? Learn techniques to color resurface and embellish cloth, ribbons and trims. Experiment with a variety of creative treatments, Devore’ fabric etching, wax resistance dying, fabric gilding with metal foil and instant set dyes. Design and print fabric from a tablet to a home office ink jet printer allowing the manipulation of color and scale to produce one-of-a-kind fabric designs.

A working knowledge of methods in dyeing, printing and etching on natural fabrics using old and new techniques.
Teacher provides: A notebook for each student with information on each technique and product supplies list, with space for additional class notes, recipes and fabric samples. Silk and cotton fabric samples for class techniques.

Students must bring: Sharp scissors, glue stick (archival), plastic apron, disposable gloves dust mask, pencil and pen, small soft 1/4″ brush.

Pattern Making Essentials

Description
The focus of the class will be to translate a sketch into a flat pattern, then into a three-dimensional paper pattern ready for fitting on to figurative doll. With the diversity of doll styles, students are encouraged to bring their own doll to work on ensuring a perfect fit. Catherine will be teaching both the French style of draping and traditional pattern making, with techniques that manipulate the bodice, sleeve and skirts enabling many variations that cross both historical eras and fantasy designs.

A working knowledge of advanced pattern making, enabling them to create variations to a basic pattern and full set of patterns for their own doll/figure.
Teacher provides: Instruction sheet and reference material, pattern paper, light weight vilene for toile – mockup, folder to store drafting and pattern, quarter life size pattern blocks set.
Kit fee: None
Students must bring: A doll to use for drafting patterns, selection of sharp drawing pencils, metric clear plastic ruler 15 cm – 6″, metric metal ruler 30 cm – 12″, metric set square 15 cm – 6″. small French curve ruler, dress makers tape measure, eraser, scissors, dressmaking pins, pencil sharpener, clear sticky tape, masking tape.
