17", Eaplast, one-of-a-kind

"I was playing with the textures while working on this piece. I scratched the surface of his body parts, as on the etched prints. Some fragments of his costume were sculpted and blended with the softness of the real fabric. I hope he still has a friendly and warm look in spite of those rugged surfaces and plain colors."

Akira & Larry Blount
Where Do Ideas Come From

Mixed Media (Cloth Figure) 2008
Size: 24” h x 17”l x 10”d
Materials: Cloth: rust dyed, needle sculpted; fiberfill, leather, Natraj wings, Grape vine tendril hair, beads, (4) air dry clay birds, pinecone scales, plywood base, wood eggs, botanicals, colored pencil, acrylic paint, metallic rubs

The chicken/bird is made of fabric stuffed with polyester fiberfill, needle sculpted, stiffened and embellished with individual pine cone scales. The figure riding the bird is also cloth, needle sculpted and clothed in leather and rust dyed cloth which Akira does herself in the backyard. Larry built the twig structure underneath the bird, joined the pieces together and then Akira built the nest from styrofoam and twigs individually inserted. The eggs were purchased. The whole piece reflects Akira’s unique view of life where people, animals and nature live and work together with mutual respect and admiration. You can see more of Akira’s work from the past and present on her website at www.akirastudios.com.

Heather Maciak
Alice, too!

2008

“Alice, too!” was created as a variation on a theme in 2008 and is 13” tall, all porcelain, with painted eyes and a mohair wig. Although I am intrigued by dark-haired Alice Liddell, the ‘real’ Alice for whom the book was written by Charles Dodgson (pen name Lewis Carroll), the Alice of my childhood was the blonde, blue-eyed child that most people think of as Alice in Wonderland, and here she is!

Live-stock

2008

The size is appr. 22 inches high

Head, hands and feet of the doll are handsculpted into porcelain. The animals are made out of papier maché.

The idea was to make a pile of animals. The colors are inspired on the old photography in my mother's photo album.
