Classes and some programs will be at Marin Suites Hotel
Programs will be held at Corte Madera Town Center (a short walk from the hotel)
The Banquet and NIADA Artists Show & Sale will be at the Marin Art & Garden Center

This is an all suites hotel so gather your friends together and book your suite early
as we have limited suites reserved as there is a large car race nearby the Sunday
before classes start so there will be a lot of demand for hotel rooms.

The one bedroom and two bedroom suites both have large living rooms so book whatever
your needs are. There are several suites with double beds which are on our room block.
Enter more than one person, click on check availability it will show you all the options.
If you only enter one person it will not include the two bedroom suite option.
You can always cancel your reservations but you need to book it now!

Transportation: Fly into SFO and take the Marin Airporter to Larkspur Landing.
The bus driver will call a taxi for you to Marin Suites Hotel.

Marin County is located in Northern California, just across the Golden Gate bridge, north of
San Francisco and nestled between Sonoma County to the north and Napa to the northeast.
Summers are warm & dry, with the strong possibility of morning and evening fog.
It is wise to come prepared by bringing clothing you can layer on and off.

Demonstrations by NIADA Artists:

Ankie Daanen: The Possibilities in working with Creative Paperclay.
Pat Lillich: Figuring Out Alternative Jointing. She will show some of her solutions to problems jointing various dolls and toys, and will share her brainstorming process with us!
Leslie Molen: Expressive Hands in Cloth, in which she will show us her tricks to create expressive hands in cloth including sewing tips, fabric choices, armature, stuffing techniques, and posing.
Connie Smith: Waxing a Stoneware Bust, as part of the process of waxing fired wares before assembling them into finished dolls.
Annie Wahl: Native American Beading. Learn how to "Lane Stitch", also referred to as "Lazy Stitch", with beads. Lazy Stitch beadwork is one of the simplest beadwork techniques. It is good for covering large areas in a relatively short period of time. This will be a hands-on teaching technique with a hand out.

Attention Visiting Artists!
You are welcome to participate in NIADA's TEN by TWELVE program!
Twelve visiting artists will have an opportunity to introduce their dolls to all NIADA
conference attendees in a special program in which each participant will show
ten projected images of their work.

Each photo will be allotted twenty seconds for artists to add their description or
commentary. If you are a visiting artist registering for the NIADA conference, this is
your chance to introduce your work to NIADA artists and patrons.

OPTIONAL FEES:
Visiting Artist Critique: Bring one doll per critique for a private individual critique on
Sunday, June 30th
by an assigned NIADA artist. Work registered for the critique
will be on display for Conference registrants to view. (about the Critique)
Helper Raffle: Buy chances to win dolls and doll-related wonders donated by
NIADA members. The Helper Raffle is held during the Banquet dinner.
Photography: Professional photographer Michael Puff will be available to photograph
attendees dolls. Fee paid directly to Photographer: $45 per doll, will shoot what ever images
are needed or desired, with a minimum of a full and head shot. (sign-up at Registration Desk).

PLEASE NOTE: Although sales during conference and at all conference locations and rooms
are limited to NIADA artists' work only, it is worthwhile for visiting artists to bring samples
of their best pieces. There are opportunities to show that work. There is a critique, the critique exhibit, and the challenge exhibit. Many times these exhibits have been covered in the press.
Also at panel discussions, during classes, demos and workshops, it is perfectly appropriate
to use your work to discuss techniques and presentations.

CANCELLATION POLICY
The future is always changing and we understand if you may need to cancel.

NIADA School Classes There is a $35.00 processing fee for Dollmaking Classes. All other funds
will be refunded until May 15th 2013, after this date there will be a 50% refund for
Dollmaking Classes unless your reserved class space can be filled with another student. 
You will then be refunded your class fee except the processing fee. If a class is canceled and
we can not find a replacement class that you wish to take, all funds will be refunded.

Class Wait List Students may choose to place their name on a waiting list for a desired
class that is full. However, signing up for an alternative class on the same day is a commitment
to those teaching, and cannot be changed. Some alternative classes may be available for
last-minute sign up for those who wish to remain on a particular waiting list until classes begin.

Helen Bullard Scholarship
The Helen Bullard Scholarship fund was created by the NIADA Patrons to help emerging
doll artists to attend the NIADA Conference. Each year, one recipient is awarded free
conference registration, based on their promising potential and work already accomplished.
Please apply for consideration before May 15th, 2013
by emailing 5 photos of
your work plus a paragraph stating why you are interested in NIADA.

class001 Kate Church:
THE SCULPTURAL DOLL Workshop: An Inspirational Approach to the Doll
This class will teach Kate's approach to making polymer faces, hands and feet. Students will then create two cloth bodied figures, incorporating the clay parts-- one soft and another sculptural--using a simple wire armature. This three day class will give students everything they need to create in this style of character.

How to Sculpt, Paint & Finish a Heartbreaker Face
Ankie will teach you how to sculpt paint and finish a 'Heartbreaker' (art) face.  An explanation on how to make a complete doll will be included. She will demonstrate the pattern for the body, and how to make the hands and feet. Everybody will receive a "How to do" CD on how to make the costume for the 'Heartbreaker'. You will find more than 100 pictures on the CD that demonstrates step-by-step how to make the costume.

Ankie will teach you how to make a doll body. It's very important that your doll has a good body, and Ankie will teach you how to design and shape the body.

How to Build a Stop-motion Puppet Armature
The process of creating animatable figures uses many techniques from doll-making, In this class students will learn the process of stop-motion puppet body armature construction, from initial character design through to armature construction, and body construction, hands and feet.

A blank head will be used in this class, or students can bring their own. Doll heads need to be no bigger than 2" or larger if they are light eg: paperclay, fabric. At the end of this workshop students will have a posable base armature ready for animation.

Hand-Built Stoneware Anthropomorphic Set of Doll Bust, Hands and Feet
MONDAY: Overview of stoneware clays, tools, kiln use/safety, ceramic stains, and sourcing supplies. Wedging clay, making slip and throwing a slab without equipment. Coning a head/bustplate. Jointing ears: when/how to do it
Blocking-in basic features from reference photos.
TUESDAY: Blocking in symmetrical pairs of hands and feet. Building believable details: knuckles, nails, wrinkles, finger & toe characteristics, shoe parts, anthropomorphic adaptations (cloven-toed shoes, etc.). Adding surface textures: fur, feathers, scales, wrinkles, etc. Using high-fire ceramic stains on stonewares: wet and dry brush techniques.

Costume Design
The ever changing silhouette of the male and female body throughout history, is the key to understanding costume design. In this three day workshop, students will drape  and construct an accurate period costume on a quarter  scale mannequin.

class007 Shelley Thornton:
Heads and Hands Sculpted in Cloth
The enthusiastic response to her 2-day face sculpting class, prompted Shelley to design an expanded curriculum for this 3-day workshop. You will make a head, learning the techniques Shelley has developed to needle-sculpt a stuffed, seamed understructure, then cover it with a knit fabric "skin". Additionally, there will be a face embroidery demonstration, and you will learn to make and apply stuffed, quilted ears, and a fabric hair cap, the base for cloth hairdos. Shelley will also teach you the way she makes her hands.

class009 Marlaine Verhelst:
One-day Masterclass ~ How to Sculpt an Expressive Face
So you can sculpt a doll now but what if you want to give your doll a specific expression? Marlaine Verhelst will guide you step by step through the process of sculpting expressions in air dry clay. The choices are Happy, Arrogant, Surprised or Angry. This class will bring your future dolls to the next level. In the same class Marlaine will demonstrate the painting process with water color. You can bring your already sculpted (airdry clay) head to paint. Program includes demo on sculpting hands and feet in air dry clay.
All skill levels.
