and in 2009 we will “return
to the cradle” for a more intimate and laid-back annual
conference at the well-known

CONFERENCE
OVERVIEW & HIGHLIGHTS
Our
focus this year will be on sharing information, as
we present expanded opportunities to learn in master
classes, to be inspired by NIADA’s new book,
and, being in a venue that will be conducive to small
relaxing groups (sitting on porches gazing at the
Smoky Mountains), to learn more from each other in
everyday casual exchanges.
Programs
will include:

speaker Elsa Mora, Mikki Kavich (granddaughter of
Helen Bullard) sharing Helen’s work, Larry
Blount showing fine crafts of the area, programs
from doll collectors who are special to NIADA and
much more.

All
attendees are invited to make a doll (out of a medium
that is new and unfamiliar to them) to show in the
Challenge Exhibition.

A critique is now required before application for
NIADA artist membership.

registration required) Classes are open to both conference
registrants and non-registrants. Choose from 18 classes.
Sign up early; space is limited. Classes
are subject to cancellation if the minimum number
of students is not registered by July 1. Late registration
will be available for classes not filled or cancelled

Special
Guest Artist, Keynote Speaker:
Elsa
Mora
Elsa
Mora (nicknamed Elsita) is a multimedia artist
born and raised on the island of Cuba where she graduated
from the Art School in 1991. In 2000 she met her
husband William Horberg in Havana, and
they married in 2002. Horberg, also a creative person,
is a film producer in Hollywood, and together
they have collaborated on different comic book projects.
Her own work has included paintings and drawings,
paper cut pieces, paper dolls, 0ne-of-a-kind garments,
and toy-like sculpted painted figures. Mora has shown
her art individually and in group exhibitions in
galleries and museums all over the world. Her work
is currently represented by galleries in New York
City, Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, and Bethesda in
the US, as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico and Zurich,
Switzerland. She has been a visiting artist at the
Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Institute of Boston,
San Francisco State University and San Diego State
University, among other places. In 2000 Mora won
the prestigious UNESCO-Aschberg grant. Mora,
her husband and their three children currently live
in Los Angeles, California.

2009 NIADA Conference
SOUVENIR
NIADA’s
wonderful new book, NIADA
Art Dolls: Rich Traditions, New Ideas will have
its premier unveiling at the 2009 conference and
will be given to registrants as the conference souvenir.
Directed and edited by NIADA artist Shelley Thornton,
and designed by NIADA artist Chris Chomick, the nearly
400-page hard-cover, all color book will present
work from over 150 doll artists who’ve been
elected to NIADA since its beginning in 1963. This
stunning array of doll images will be an invaluable
ongoing inspiration to doll lovers and artists alike.
NIADA Art Dolls: Rich Traditions,
New Ideas is
published by NIADA, Inc. and the Susan Quinlan Doll & Teddy Bear
Museum & Library of Santa Barbara, CA.
SCHOLARSHIP
The Helen Bullard Scholarship fund was
created by the NIADA Patrons to help emerging doll
artists to attend the NIADA Conference. Each year,
one recipient is awarded free conference registration,
based on their promising potential and work already
accomplished. Please apply for consideration before
June 1 by emailing 5 photos of your work plus a paragraph
stating why you are interested in NIADA to Shelley
